EDP Renewables has joined the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce
EDP Renewables (EDPR) is pleased to join the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce! Coinciding with the conclusion of construction on Brittlebush Solar Park and the start of construction on the Flatland Energy Storage Project component of the solar park, EDPR is eager to embrace the Chamber’s offerings and grow its long-term relationship with the city of Coolidge and other project neighbors.
Brittlebush Solar Park is situated south of Coolidge and east of Randolph. The project site was selected for its strong solar resource, access to transmission lines, and gently sloping farmland. Brittlebush will utilize thousands of single-axis, tracking, photovoltaic panels, powering up to 38,000 homes with clean, renewable energy sourced from Arizona’s abundant sun. Construction on Brittlebush is expected to be completed early in the new year.
The Flatland Energy Storage Project will be a 200 MW/800 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system utilizing lithium-ion technology, designed and manufactured in the U.S. by Tesla, and built within the footprint of Brittlebush Solar. About to start construction, and scheduled to be online in 2025, the facility will have enough capacity to power up to 45,000 homes for four hours during peak electricity demand periods. The batteries can absorb the solar park’s excess energy when customer demand is lower and store it for use during times of peak demand, which increases the overall stability of the grid.
Brittlebush and Flatland are set to provide significant benefits to the local and regional economy. With an estimated contribution of over $31.7 million paid to local governments in the form of tax dollars throughout the project lifetimes, the solar and storage projects will provide significant resources to local schools and services such as Coolidge USD #021, Pinal County Jr. College, Pinal County Library, and fire, irrigation, and water conservation services. Millions of dollars will also be spent supporting local small businesses during the projects’ lifetimes. Upon completion, the projects will have created hundreds of construction jobs and host 7 or more permanent operations positions, many of which are hired locally. Brittlebush and Flatland will save more than 254 million gallons of water each year compared to traditional energy dispatched onto the grid and will prevent the air pollution that causes smog, acid rain, and climate changes.
Additionally, Brittlebush and Flatland are strengthening Arizona's and the broader United States' energy security, while helping to diversify the domestic power supply to improve overall stability and meet increasing energy demands.
