With tax season behind us, many taxpayers are now looking forward to receiving their tax refund. The good news is - they can check the status online at any time.
Taxpayers should have the following information on hand to successfully check on their status:
- Social Security
- Number
- Filing status
- Zip code
- Tax year
The timeline for those who e-filed:
- Confirmation: Tax software vendors send an email confirmation within 48 hours of submission.
- Online Update: Status is typically available online within three business days after the receipt notice.
- Processing: Most refunds are processed within a couple of weeks after the return is received.
The timeline for paper filers:
- Tracking Start: Refund tracking can begin about six weeks after filing. This allows the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) time to open the mail, sort, and scan the return into the system. The data must still be manually entered, verified, and checked for accuracy for the return to be considered processed.
- Processing Time: Allow a minimum of 10 weeks from date filed for the return to fully process the return.
Fraud Prevention and Accuracy Checks
ADOR uses detailed fraud-detection and verification checks before issuing any refunds to protect taxpayers’ identities.
Direct Deposit Refund Expectations
- Once approved, direct deposits typically appear in a taxpayer’s bank account within two business days.
- Ensure bank account and routing numbers are correct, as ADOR cannot reissue refunds until the receiving bank returns the funds.
- If a tax preparer was selected to receive the refund, the preparer is responsible for providing the funds, which may cause additional delays.
Paper Check Refund Expectations
- Mailed within 3-5 business days after approval.
- Allow an additional 5-6 business days for USPS delivery.
